"Νikos Sofialakis (1914 - 2002): The Sculptor of Classical Realism

September  5 - 15, 2012​



Τhe exhibition entitled "Nikos Sofialakis [1914 - 2002] The Sculptor of Classical Realism" formally opened to the public on the evening of Wednesday, September 5th 2012, at the Emmanuel Roidis Hall of the Municipal Cultural Center of Hermoupolis, Syros.  The exhibition, which is under the auspices of the Syros Organization for Culture and Athletics, brings to a close this year's SYROS CULTURE FESTIVAL with the two-week exhibition of the works of Nikos Sofialakis.  The exhibition, which was preceded by a short, informative opening ceremony on the life and works of the artist, was inaugurated by the Mayor of Hemoupolis-Syros, Mr. Ioannis Dekavallas, and the President of the Nikos Sofialakis Center of Neoclassical Sculpture, Vice Admiral Georgios Chraniotis.

Dedicated to the Mother of Syros: The work "Mother and Child"

The exhibition entitled "Nikos Sofialakis [1914-2002] The Sculptor of Classical Realism" ended on Saturday, September 15 2012, in a touching closing ceremony that took place at the Municipal Cultural Center of Hermoupolis in Syros. The works of Nikos Sofialakis bade farewell to the lovely island of Syros with a dedication, that of the bronze cast of the superb high relief, Mother and Child, (pictured here), which was gifted to the people of Syros by the family of the artist.

The Works of Nikos Sofialakis at the "130 Years Nikos Kazantzakis" Exhibition at the Foundation of the Hellenic World

The Foundation of the Hellenic World, in collaboration with the Kazantzakis Publications, the Nikos Kazantzakis Museum, and the Nikos Sofialakis Center of Neoclassical Sculpture, present, for the first time in Athens, an exhibition-homage for the great Greek author, entitled "130 Years Nikos Kazantzakis".  

The exhibition opened formally to the public on Friday, December 14, 2012, with great success at the Foundation of the Hellenic World, in the presence of distinguished guests who honored the memory of the great author and paid tribute to the magnitude of his works, which are on display at the exhibition.

Opening salutations were delivered by Mr. Dimitris Ephraimoglou, Managing Consultant of the Foundation, Ms. Niki Stavrou, Director of the Kazantzakis Publications, Vice Admiral Georgios P. Chraniotis (ret), Founder and President of the Nikos Sofialakis Center of Neoclassical Sculpture, and Mr. Lefteris Charonitis, member of the Executive Board of the Nikos Kazantzakis Museum.

Islands of War, Islands of Memory:  The works of Nikos Sofialakis "narrate" WWII

at the University of Cambridge 

April 5-7 2013

 

The works of the Cretan sculptor Nikos Sofialakis were presented at the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom during the International Conference entitled, "Islands of War, Islands of Memory", which was held with especial success on April 5, 6, and 7 2013.



The Conference, which was co-organized by the University of Cambridge and Monash University of Australia, was held at the McDonald Institute for Archaeological Research at the University of Cambridge with the participation of 26 speakers from Universities and Research Centers from around the world.



The Conference focused on the exploration and deeper understanding of the historical and socio-political memory of war as it has been recorded and expressed in the collective consciousness of island peoples....
